Taupo gliding club is always delighted to welcome new members to the exciting and challenging sport of soaring! Gliding Instructors are qualified volunteers and do not charge for their instructional time. To make your decision easier, we have summarised several options for your consideration.
Option One: The "Instructional Trial Flight" Option You have decided that you would like an Instructional Trial Flight. A trial flight consists of one flight with an instructor in a two seat, dual control glider. Each flight consists of a ground briefing prior to launching. After release from the tow plane your instructor will demonstrate the controls to you and from there you will be able to take the controls and experience the joy of gliding. The cost for an instructional trial flight is $220.00. including a short term membership to the Taupo Gliding Club and a further five flights at club rates.
Option Two: The "Weekender" Option If you are not completely sure or you have experienced the Instructional Trial Flight Option and you would like a few more flights, the "Weekender" could be for you! This package offers a short term membership to the Taupo Gliding Club, Five Instructional Training Flights and Instructional Theory Briefings over a weekend or two. The cost is $575.00*.
*The cost of Gliding New Zealand registration is to be added to this cost which varies depending up on which month you join.
Option Three: The "Let's Do It" Option Go straight for the full 12 month membership to the Taupo Gliding Club and Gliding New Zealand and get involved with this wonderful club and sport. Within this option there are two choices: A. The initial membership cost of $380.00 and then all training flights are conducted on a "pay as you go" basis. B. The "Scheme". By joining the Scheme you pay the initial membership cost of $380.00 and then $800.00**up front for the scheme. You then only have to pay for the launch. This is a considerable saving over hourly rates for the glider over the year. ** This price is based on a full membership year 01 April – 31 March and up to 30 hours of gliding.
Option Four: The "Go For Solo" Option How about going solo in a week? We cannot guarantee that you will go solo in this time but you will be well on the way with this well structured training package. You must be a member of Gliding NZ or the Taupo Gliding Club. The course will include up to 10 hours and 20 Instructional Training Flights and Instructional Theory Briefings over a week***. The cost of this option is between $2500 and $4000. *** This is weather dependent and alternative arrangements will be arranged in case of bad weather eg; We can extend the training into a second week at a time suitable for you.
With all options you get access to one of the best situated gliding clubs in New Zealand offering some of the best soaring conditions. There is cheap onsite accommodation for visiting pilots and their families, excellent club facilities and a modern fleet of gliders.
