Training to Solo Pilot
The Taupo Gliding Club can offer you flying on weekends and Wednesdays also some flying during the week should we have a Tow Pilot and Instructor available.
All Tow Pilots and Instructors are voluntary.
You could achieve solo over a period of 4 weeks, with study and exams in the mornings and flying in the afternoons. The average student gets to solo in approx. 10 to 15 hours within 45 to 55 flights.
The aviation experience of our instructors in both professional and general flying is a great asset to the club.
As a student there are many advantages to a live in course. On site accommodation is often available or you can pitch a tent, use your camper van or stay in town.
The ability to immerse yourself in the activities of the club, from morning glider preparations, glider rigging, to assisting with launches, hangering at the end of the day and then to a chat over a refreshment after flying has finished. The peace and serenity of a quiet airfield are all part of the experience and make this a unique opportunity.
Taupo is the event capital of New Zealand and has unsurpassed options for adventure and activities off field, so if gliding is curtailed due to weather or other reasons there is plenty to occupy your time.
